Our story
How it started
NimoPlay began in a small apartment with a big cardboard box.
“Go up in minutes, come down just as fast, and never ask a family to give up a room for it.”
The playhouse inside it took most of a Saturday to build, came with a bag of screws that never quite matched the holes, and by the following month it was in the way of everything. Taking it apart meant destroying it. That was the moment the idea started: a playhouse that goes up in minutes, comes down just as fast, and does not ask a family to give up a room for it.
The hard part was the joint. Getting panels to hold each other without screws, glue or brackets meant years of prototypes, machined edges that were a fraction too loose or a fraction too tight, and a lot of afternoons watching kids climb on test builds to see what gave way first. The patented locking system that came out of it is the whole product: it is why a NimoPlay stands solid during play, why there is no hardware to lose, and why you can rebuild it hundreds of times without wearing it out.
We design for the homes most families actually live in: apartments, condos, houses where the living room is also the playroom. That is why panels are light enough to carry one-handed, why the stack is thin enough to slide behind a door, and why we spend as long on the outside of a playhouse as the inside. Engraved details run around all four sides, because one of those sides is facing your sofa.
Everything is designed and manufactured in Canada. We keep the range small and spend longer on each design, working with materials chosen for durability and finishes that are safe for the kids who will inevitably chew on the doorframe. A playhouse should outlast the phase that prompted it, then be waiting in the closet for the next child in the family.
What we hold ourselves to
- Simple to build
- If a build needs a manual, we have not finished designing it. Every joint has to make sense the first time someone picks up a panel.
- Made to be moved
- Weight and thickness are decisions, not accidents. Panels have to be liftable by one adult and storable in the gap behind a door.
- Good enough for the living room
- A playhouse sits in the middle of family life. It should look like something you chose, not something you tolerated.
- Built to be handed down
- We would rather sell one playhouse that lasts three kids than three that last one. The joints are made for hundreds of rebuilds.
